Dear Luis, you hit. I think the join venture with the author must be first. So, we can talk about turning, changing. Sometimes sticked, sometimes not. The most problem is when the italian language joke destroyes in english. And slang: AE is different from BE. And “that, wich, who, whom, those, anyway, btw”. Hard to decide when is familiar speaking or cambridge session. That’s the reason for friendship with authors is so necessary.

Let’s start saying I am NOT a translator. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t dare to jump on such a dangerous job; unless I have a masochist desire to either rush a translation (doing probably a horrible job) or expend hours getting familiar with the work and the author I am translating so it becomes sort of my own (something you need to make a good translation).

We are not talking about translating a “Videorecorde manual. That is easy, almost word by word. We are talking about words from another person, thoughts and feelings, and trying to do it with as much fidelity as possible.

When I started to read (and understand) books in English as original language I realized how bad some of the translations I read before were. I read some Spanish books in English and was horrified with some of the versions.

As a translator you need to become the author, you need to feel his/her pain and happiness, suffer and enjoy the story. You need to understand everything that surrounds the author and what he is trying to communicate. I think a perfect translation is almost impossible but a good translator will make it close enough. The closest one would be to read the work in its original language.

For my own experience, when my first story “A Walk” was translated to Italian by Jd, I commented I felt it sounded closer to my heart than the English version I had written. Probably because the similitude between Spanish (my native language) and Italian. I can talk for the rest of the authors by in my case I am extremely satisfied with the work Jd has done, and I understand how difficult it may be for him. Maybe for my next story I will add some “sidenotes” that would facilitate his work :)

Funny and “just a coincidence” ? that the next story I am working on talks about language… but you’ll have to wait for Jd’s translation.

Esatto. In questi giorni stiamo vedendo di mettere in piedi anche l’ambaradàn in francese, ma è un’anticipazione di una notizia che vi comunicheremo non appena sarà possibile.
Btw, siamo interessati a tout le monde: francia, sudamerica, oriente estremo e vicino, sarebbe bello conoscere anche gente del continente africano. Come si capirà, l’inglese è una scelta più che obbligata, ma per la comunicazione, non per lo stile o le idee.
